THIS IS A FUN STRATEGY BOARD GAME WHERE YOU TRY TO BEAT YOUR OPPONENT IN A RACE
THROUGH AN OBSTACLE COURSE.
PLAYERS:
2 PLAYERS, WHITE AND BLACK. PLAYER TO GO FIRST ALTERNATES SINCE THERE IS AN
ADVANTAGE IN GOING FIRST.
BOARD:
THE GAME BOARD IS A 12 X 12 CHECKERBOARD. THE SQUARES ARE NUMBERED 1..9,A,B,C
IN EACH DIRECTION VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL. WHITE HAS A STARTING SQUARE AT
1,1 (UPPER LEFT CORNER) AND AN ENDING SQUARE AT C,C (LOWER RIGHT CORNER);
BLACK'S STARTING/ENDING SQUARES ARE AT 1,C (UPPER RIGHT CORNER) AND C,1 (LOWER
LEFT CORNER).
PIECES:
EACH PLAYER HAS ONLY 1 GAME PIECE, REPRESENTING HIMSELF. IN ADDITION THERE
ARE 12 "NO-MAN'S LAND" SQUARES WHICH NO PLAYER MAY MOVE TO, BUT ONLY ON EVEN
DIFFICULTY LEVELS. THE REST OF THE BOARD SQUARES EITHER HAVE AN X OR A CROSS
(T) IN THEM, DETERMINED AT RANDOM AT GAME START.
OBJECT OF THE GAME:
THE GOAL IS TO MOVE YOUR PIECE FROM THE STARTING SQUARE TO THE ENDING SQUARE
AND THEN BACK AGAIN "N" TIMES, WHERE N IS THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL (1..9). (LEVEL
1 MEANS YOU RACE TO THE ENDING SQUARE AND THAT'S ALL).
ON YOUR TURN YOU CAN ONLY MOVE YOUR PIECE ONE SQUARE, TO A NON-OCCUPIED LEGAL
(NOT A NO-MAN'S LAND) SQUARE, AND ONLY IN A N-S/E-W (T) DIRECTION, OR A
NW-NE-SW-SE (X) DIRECTION, DETERMINED BY THE SQUARE THE *OPPONENT* IS ON.
IF THE OPPONENT IS ON A START OR END SQUARE YOU CAN MOVE IN ANY OF THE 8
ALLOWABLE DIRECTIONS.
AFTER A PLAYER'S PIECE LEAVES A T OR X SQUARE, IT IS TWISTED, SO THAT AN X
BECOMES A T AND VICE-VERSA.
INSTEAD OF MOVING YOUR PIECE, YOU MAY FLIP A T OR X SQUARE ADJACENT TO YOUR
OPPONENT'S PIECE, BUT ONLY IF THAT SQUARE IS NOT ADJACENT TO YOUR OWN PIECE,
AND YOUR OPPONENT'S PIECE IS NOT ON OR ADJACENT TO ANY START OR END SQUARE.
REMEMBER, PLAYERS' PIECES MAY NOT SHARE A SQUARE: FIRST ONE TO IT HAS DIBS.
ALSO, IF YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR OPPONENT WITHOUT A LEGAL MOVE, YOU WIN.
DIFFICULTY LEVELS:
YOU CAN SET THE DIFFICULTY LEVEL AS ANY NUMBER FROM 1 (EASIEST) TO 9 (HARDEST);
WHILE THE PC IS THINKING, YOU CAN FORCE IT TO QUIT THINKING AND TAKE THE
CURRENT BEST MOVE (NOT USUALLY THE BEST MOVE!) BY HITTING THE ESC KEY. (IN THE
UNREGISTERED SHAREWARE VERSION YOU CAN ONLY PLAY AT LEVEL 1).
TO ENTER A MOVE:
JUST POINT AT THE DESIRED SQUARE WITH THE MOUSE AND CLICK IT.
IF A MOUSE IS NOT DETECTED BY THE PROGRAM, JUST TYPE THE ROW NUMBER (1..9,A,B,C)
OF THE DESIRED SQUARE, THEN THE COL NUMBER (1..9,A,B,C).
TO OFFER A DRAW TO THE OPPONENT, HIT THE "D" KEY INSTEAD OF A MOVE.
TO RESIGN (FORFEIT THE GAME), HIT THE "R" KEY OR "F" KEY INSTEAD OF A MOVE.
QUICK DRAW:
WHILE THE PC IS THINKING, YOU CAN HIT THE "!" KEY TO CAUSE IT TO QUIT
IMMEDIATELY AND DECLARE A DRAW.
PLAYERS:
THE COMPUTER CAN PLAY 1 OR BOTH SIDES, AND THE KEYBOARD THE REST. USE FUNCTION
KEYS F3 AND F4 TO TOGGLE WHO PLAYS WHITE AND BLACK. THE GAME DEFAULT IS FOR
WHITE TO BE PLAYED BY THE KEYBOARD, BLACK BY THE COMPUTER.
